Reynoldsburg raises water, sewage rates
(by Rachel Scofield, Staff Writer - November 04, 2009)
Beginning in January, Reynoldsburg residents will pay more for water and sewage and possibly park services.
The rate for sewer service will increase 2 percent from $5.75 to $5.87 per 1,000 gallons, Water Department Supervisor Mark Kipp said.
The rate for water service will increase 10.5 percent from $4.64 to $5.13 per 1,000 gallons, Kipp said.
Columbus provides the water and sewer service to Reynoldsburg, and Columbus raised the rates, Kipp said.
The parks and recreation department also proposed rate increases.
Reynoldsburg City Schools began charging the parks higher fees for the use of school facilities, Parks Director Jason Shamblin said.
To cover the increased expense, the rate for youth basketball would increase from $30 to $80 per player, Shamblin said.
The rate for an adult volleyball team would increase from $235 to $695, Shamblin said.
Councilman Mel Clemens said the city needs to find alternatives to keep the recreation fees low.
"I don't like youth basketball going up $50," Clemens said. "I don't see our recreation department charging that to kids playing basketball."
Council President William Hills said the proposed 300-precent increase for the volleyball league was also excessive.
"They are going to ask themselves, 'how badly do I want to play volleyball?'" Hills said.
