Spaghetti dinner at St. Agnes
St. Agnes Parish, 2350 Mound St., will host a spaghetti dinner on Oct. 18, from noon to 3 p.m. Cost is $3 for child (8th grade and under); $6 for adults and $5 for senior citizens. Dinner includes spaghetti and meatballs, roll, butter, dessert, coffee, tea or punch. Carry-out is available.
Westland students earn AP awards
Twelve Westland High School students have earned Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on Advanced Placement exams.
Nine students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4.0 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and a 4.0 or higher on eight or more of these exams. These students are Matthew Demana, William Emmelhainz, Keri Hagans, Alexander Logue. Jared Myers, Jordan Penwell, Irina Posykalyuk, Courtney Skaggs, and Cyle Tiller.
Three students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3.0 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are Elizabeth Altfillisch, Luis Bautista, and James Burns.
Spirit Breakfast kicks off Ready’s homecoming activities
Bishop Ready High School’s annual Spirit Breakfast, held at the school’s gym, will be Oct. 15, at 7:30 a.m. Guest speaker for the event, which serves as a pep rally for the school’s homecoming football game, will be Chris Strickland, assistant athletic trainer for the Columbus Blue Jackets.Cost for the full breakfast is $15 and reservation deadline is Oct. 12. Aglow International to meet
Aglow International will meet Oct. 13, at The Potter’s House, 3220 Lowell Dr., at 9:45 a.m. The cost is $5 and includes a continental breakfast. Dr. Tahira Saleem, the national director for Aglow in Pakistan, will be the guest speaker. For reservations call 879-7253 or 451-4068.
Hilltonia Homecoming celebration
Hilltonia United Methodist Church, 514 Columbian Ave., is celebrating more than 80 years of ministry on the Hilltop with a Homecoming on Oct. 11.
Former members, pastors and those whose lives have been touched by Hilltonia are invited to a day of celebration.
Morning Worship Bishop C. Joseph Sprague will be the featured preacher at 10:45 a.m., followed by a potluck lunch at noon. Bring a covered dish to share. The Homecoming celebration will follow at 1 p.m. withmusic by the Westside Men’s Chorus and The Boggs Family. Former Pastors will reflect on their days at Hilltonia.
“Fit For the King”
Hilltop Community Full Gospel Church, 179 N. Huron Ave., will begin the program “Fit For the King” on Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. This program is to help those struggling with issues that affect their lives become balanced spiritually, emotionally, menatlly and physically. Military prayer service
Alkire Road Church of Christ, 2779 Alkire Road, will host a prayer service for our men and women serving in the military Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. A special invitation is extended to families of those serving.Bring with you the information on your family member, as well as pictures and addresses. Low-cost flu shots
This year, more than ever, it is important to protect yourself and your loved ones against seasonal influenza. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a yearly seasonal flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against seasonal flu.
LifeCare Alliance is helping to ensure a healthy central Ohio community this flu season by offering low-cost flu shots to anyone, age 3 and up. Also, LifeCare Alliance offers a no-cost flu shot alternative to high risk adults without health coverage and who meet specific financial guidelines.
Walk-in flu shot clinics will be held at LifeCare Alliance every Friday, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at 1699 West Mound St. In addition, flu shots will be given by appointment for those unable to attend the walk-in clinics. Baked steak dinner
Parkview UMC, 344 S. Algonquin Ave.,(across from Westgate Park) will hold their annual baked steak dinner Oct. 17.
Seating times are 4-5:30 p.m. and 5:30-7 p.m. Carry-out is available. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Reservations are needed by 9 p.m. on Oct. 13, and may be called to 875-0393 or the church at 274-8431.
Music, Message and Meal
There will be a free hot meal served at Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2930 W. Broad St., on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 6-7 p.m. as a part of Hoge’s HM3 (Music, Message and Meal) program. All are welcome to attend. Fall Harvest Festival
Glenwood United Methodist Church, at the corner of Valleyview Drive and Hague Avenue, will hold its annual Fall Harvest Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 3. The festival will feature crafts, flea market booths, a theme basket auction, lunch food, a bake sale, Bloodmobile, the Greater Columbus Concert Band at 1 p.m., flu shots from 9 a.m. to noon and other activities and entertainment. Lincoln Village clean up
The Lincoln Village/West Broad Clean and Safe Community Project has scheduled a neighborhood clean up for Oct. 17. Volunteers should meet at the Lincoln Lodge at 8:30 a.m. for a hot breakfast. Clean up will be from 9 a.m. to noon. Any student participating in the cleanup will receive a community service certificate.
African Children’s Choir set to perform
The internationally acclaimed and grammy-nominated African Children’s Choir will be appearing in concert at The Church Next Door, 5755 Feder Road, on Oct. 11 at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. No ticket is required.
The African Children’s Choir is a group of approximately 20-25 African children, ages 5-12, slected from especially needed children. They perform a wide variety of songs accompanied by African drums and ethnic instrumentation.

West HS boosters to host first Alumni Athlete Homecoming
The West High School Athletic Boosters invite all WHS alumni athletes to attend the first ever Alumni Athlete Homecoming Dinner on Oct. 9. Your $15 ticket will include both dinner and admission to the homecoming game. Dinner is open to the first 200 guests and will be served from 5 – 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All proceeds will benefit the booster’s scholarship fund for outstanding senior athletes.

American Legion Post 799
American Legion Post 799 holds their monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Prairie Township Fire Station, 123 Inah Ave. The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 13. Westland Area Commission
Westland Area Commission meets the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Doctors Hospital, 5100 W. Broad St. The commission boundaries are I-270 to the north, Hellbranch Run to the west and Johnson Road/Big Run South to the south. To find out more, log on to www.westlandareacommission.com.
Rock on the Hill
Rock on the Hill will provide free after school fun for Westside kids every Wednesday, from 4-6 p.m., at 2500 W. Broad St. Activities include snacks, art projects, games and help with homework.
Currently being offered is a five-week music workshop. Learn to play guitar, write music and particpate in music crafts and games.
Bus transportation will be provided from West Broad Elementary, but parents must pick children up by 6 p.m.

Friends hosts senior group
Senior citizens are invited to a seniors group at Friends Worship Center, 3030 Clime Road, on the second Tuesday of each month from 12-2:30 p.m. The event will feature a light lunch, games and fellowship. PTSC exercise programs
The Prairie Township Senior Center hosts the following exercise programs that are free and open to the public:

Awana Clubs

The Salvation Army Golden Age Center, 2300 W. Mound St., invites anyone aged 60 or over to attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for lunch, crafts, movies, BINGO, games, health and fitness, and fun. VFW Post 6065
VFW Post 6065 will hold their meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Meetings last about one hour and are held at the Prairie Township Senior Center, 4616 West Broad St. Those interested in getting involved or volunteering time should attend a meeting. The Ladies Auxiliary meets at 6:30 p.m. The motivations of the VFW are patriotic, historical, and educational. They strive to perpetuate the memory and history of their dead, and to assist their widows and orphans. Call Will Davis at 309-0171 for further information.
Exercise for seniors
Seniors are invited to exercise on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 55 Pasadena Ave. Men and women aged 50 to 90 and up have exercised at the facility since 2001. The instructor leads each session with warm-ups, play balls, resistance bands, hand weights, some low-impact aerobics and balance activities. Each participant can adapt the routine to his/her comfort level. The cost is $35 for each eight-week session. Call the instructor, Lori Vazquez, at 989-4595 with questiions.
Paper recycling at Parkview
Parkview United Methodist Church, 344S. Algonquin Ave., is providing the community with recycling bins for paper products. Bring newspapers, magazines, junk mail, etc., to the green and yellow bins in the church parking lot. No cardboard or phone books will be accepted. Questions, call 875-7231.
