Groveport revenue up a bit
(by Rick Palsgrove, Southeast Editor - September 15, 2009)
Groveport's income tax revenue grew for the second month in a row, but just barely.
"We had a little upturn in August," said Groveport Finance Director Ken Salak at Groveport Village Council's Sept. 14 meeting.
August joins July and February as the only months this year where the village saw an increase in income tax revenue compared to 2008.
Income tax revenues for August were $611,785 a increase of 2.33 percent compared to August 2008 when revenues were $597,843.
The total income tax revenues so far for 2009 are $6.5 million, which is down 17 percent compared to the approximately $7.9 million received at this same time in 2008. For further comparison, the income tax revenues for this same time in 2007 were $6.8 million and in 2006 they were $6.2 million.
Earlier this month Groveport Village Administrator Steve Morris said industrial activity in the town "is starting to pick up again."
"Prospect leads we receive from the state and the Columbus Chamber are up significantly and we are following up on these leads as soon as we receive them," Morris stated.
In a report to council, Morris outlined the following commercial activities:
•The Groveport Board of Zoning Appeals is reviewing variances for a potentially large project being considered for the Air East property on Pontius Road. Air East has not officially been selected for the project yet and a Duke Realty property on Spiegel Drive is also under consideration.
•Village officials plan to meet with representatives from Opus North Corporation to discuss the future of the Opus Business Center at Rickenbacker and development plans since the company has closed its Columbus office. Morris reported the company states it still plans to proceed with the development of the Kurtz Brothers property.
•Representatives from developer Pizzuti Solutions are expected to appear at council's Sept. 21 committee meeting to discuss the status of the proposed downtown retail/office development at Main and Front streets.
Other Groveport news
•Council authorized Morris to solicit bids for a contract to repaint the outdoor swimming pool at the Groveport Aquatic Center. The plan is to have the project completed this fall, pending the repair of a leak as well as weather conditions. If the project cannot be done until the spring, it could possibly delay the opening of the pool.
•The Groveport Aquatic Center ended the season with 1,104 memberships, down 168 from 2008.
•Total visits to the Groveport Recreation Center in August were 13,104 (the highest August attendance in the five years of the center), a five percent increase over August 2008.
•Halloween Beggar's Night in Groveport will be Oct. 29 from 5:30-7 p.m.
