Sergeant graduates from Northwestern center
The Reynoldsburg Division of Police has announced the recent graduation of Sergeant Jeffrey Gregory from the School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC) at Northwestern University.
Jeffrey Gregory has successfully completed the 10-week Staff and Command program held in Columbus from March 2 through May 8.
This program, which was implemented by the Center for Public Safety in 1983, has graduated more than 9,000 students both nationally and internationally.
Holy Spirit Festival Aug. 27-29
The Holy Spirit Festival and Homecoming will take place Aug. 27, 28 and 29 at 4383 E. Broad St.
Activities include a grill and corn roast, rides and games for children and musical entertainment. Music includes the sounds of Heindog and Statz, Tim O'Connor, AJ Angelo and more. Additionally, a silent auction will offer many great items for all tastes and budgets.
Hours of the festival are 6 to 11 p.m. Aug. 27, and 6 p.m. to midnight Aug. 28 and 29.

Livingston House to hold lawn concert
The Livingston House Society's August concert will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 23 on the lawn of the Livingston House, 1792 Graham Road in Reynoldsburg.
The concert will feature two great bands; the "Columbus Pops Band" and the Reynoldsburg High School Marching Band.
Also join the Livingston House Society for a special ice cream treat with Johnson's Real Ice Cream, sold for a $1 a dip. Concessions that evening will be provided by the Reynoldsburg High School Band Boosters. Bring lawn chairs and blankets for an old fashioned concert on the grounds of the Alexander W. Livingston House.
Historical Society holding flea market-book sale
The Reynoldsburg Truro Historical Society will hold its annual Flea Market-Book and Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 26 at the historical society's museum grounds, 1485 Jackson St., Reynoldsburg.

Sounds of Kensington summer concert Aug. 26
This year's Sounds of Kensington summer concert will feature entertainment by Ken and Mary - Musik According to Akkordians at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 at Kensington Place, 1001 Parkview Blvd., Columbus.

Violet Twp. Women's League to hold salad supper
The Violet Township Women's League will being its 2009-2010 meetings with its annual Salad Supper Aug. 25. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 7725 Refugee Road North.

Church offers free drive-in movies
Church of the Redeemer United Methodist will once again bring back free drive-in movies Aug. 29.
Family movies can be watched from the convenience of a car or bring a favorite lawn chair. Free popcorn as well as other snacks will be available for purchase.
Movies begin at 9 p.m. in the west parking lot of the church. Church of the Redeemer is located at 235 McNaughten Road, Columbus.

Bexley Lions discount card sale begins
Starting Aug. 16, student athletes from Bexley City Schools will be knocking on doors throughout the community selling the Lions Discount Card.
For a $10 donation, the card offers discounts for one year at area businesses including dry cleaners, restaurants, local merchants and more.
This fundraiser is part of the Boosters continuing effort to outfit and support Bexley's middle and high school athletic teams. The Boosters raise more than $65,000 each year in support of these teams. In recent years the Boosters have provided new gymnasium bleachers, weight room equipment, video recording and editing systems, scoreboards and improvements to Clowson Field. Future projects under consideration include improvements to the trophy case, victory bell, locker rooms and concessions stands.
Bexley Athletic Boosters is a non-profit-volunteer organization of parents and community members organized to benefit Bexley City Schools' athletic programs. All proceeds raised by the Boosters benefit the district's sports facilities and student athletes.

Columbus School for Girls students collaborate with governor's office
Six middle and five upper school students recently met with Hollie Hinton, director of the Governor's Office for Women's Initiatives and Outreach (GOWIO), to discuss issues important to young women.
Hinton worked with the students to brainstorm topics of interest to girls and young women that ranged from education to economics.
The Office for Women's Initiatives and Outreach is charged with engaging in public dialogue on issues as they impact women and girls in Ohio. GOWIO's initiatives include creation of the Barbara Warner Workplace Domestic Violence Executive Order and policy, partnering with the Ohio Department of Development to host workshops for women entrepreneurs and advocating the advancement of more women into leadership roles by encouraging them to apply for appointment to Ohio's state boards and commissions.
The office coordinates activities of Ohio Interagency Council on Ohio Women and Girls and is currently planning a statewide women's summit, which will take place on International Women's Day, March 8, 2010. Reynoldsburg Police to hold blood drive
The Reynoldsburg Division of Police in conjunction with the American Red Cross will host a blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. Sept. 16 in the main conference room of the police department.
Appointments will begin at noon and run every 15 minutes until 5:45 p.m. To schedule an appointment, contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-GIVELIFE.
Basketball officiating classes offered in Reynoldsburg
The Parks and Recreation Department of the city of Reynoldsburg announces the start of enrollment in the upcoming Adult Basketball Officiating Class.
The instructor will be Phil Kiser, an Ohio High School Athletic Association approved instructor in basketball officiating.
Classes will be held at the Reynoldsburg Police Department, 7240 E. Main St., on Tuesday and Sunday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. A weekday class will be held on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Municipal Building, 7232 E. Main St. Students must attend at least 80 percent of the classes. Participants cannot attend both sessions, they must pick one.
The first Wednesday class will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 1:30 p.m. The first Sunday/Tuesday class will be held on Sunday, Oct. 25 at the Reynoldsburg Police Department at 7 p.m. Classes will finish mid-December.
Cost of registration is $95 per student, which includes registration with the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Class size is limited.
Students who successfully complete the requirements of the class will be certified to officiate high school basketball games for the 2009 season. Classroom instruction will include discussion on the rules as well as discussion and demonstration on the mechanics of the basketball game.

Bexley High School AP scores at highest levels
This year, Bexley High School saw its highest rate ever of participation in Advanced Placement (AP) courses, while maintaining levels of scoring on the AP exams given at the end of the school year.
"While percent of performance has remained level, we have increased the total number per score," noted Dr. John Kellogg, school principal.
One of Bexley High School's improvement plan goals since 2003 has been to expand access to and enrollment in AP courses. Every year since 2004, the school district has required students to take the AP exam offered at the end of the course, also paying for the exam. Students who take the rigorous courses demonstrate higher levels of success in college, as research shows they are better prepared to take on the challenges of higher education. BHS currently offers 19 AP courses across the curriculum.
"We had the highest participation rate ever, in terms of tests given (up from 428 to 566) and maintained a similar percentage for each score," Kellogg said. "Our 86 total scores of 5 (the highest scores possible on the AP exam) increased to 117."
Total student participation in AP increased as well, up from a high of 240 (2008) to 277 (2009). Sixty-six percent of the members of the class of 2009 took at least one AP course during their careers at Bexley High School.

Pickerington residents receive scholarships
Pickerington residents Matthew Gusler and Morgan Hunter recently received scholarships from the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio (BX). They were selected on the basis of financial need, academic achievement and potential future impact on the commercial construction industry.
Gusler, the son of Timothy and Lisa Gusler, is in his sophomore year and is studying engineering at Purdue University. Hunter, also in her sophomore year, is studying civil engineering at The Ohio State University. She is the daughter of David and Mimi Hunter.
This year, the member-funded program, administered by the Builders Exchange Foundation, awarded $49,250 to 47 students pursing construction related careers. Since 1959, the BX Scholarship Program has provided more than $800,000 in tuition assistance to students in construction-related fields of study. Scholarships ranged from $500 to $2,000 per student.
CJHS requesting items for spring historical exhibit
The Columbus Jewish Historical Society (CJHS) is requesting loans or donations of items that best represent the period between 1840 and 1910, for its exhibit next spring entitled, "170 Years of Jewish Life in Central Ohio, 1840 to 2010."
The exhibit will open April 12, 2010 at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Greater Columbus, 1125 College Ave.
"We are looking for anything from photos and paper materials to bushel baskets, kitchen utensils, and old grocery store items," Project Chair Toby Brief said. "Specifically, we're looking for items that were brought to the U.S. from the 'Old country,' such as mortars and pestles or trunks."
Brief noted that CJHS will arrange to pick up and return loans, as well as copy old photographs.
In addition, those with information and/or the desire to research Columbus' early German and Russian/Eastern European immigrants are invited to help with the exhibition.

Biker and Hot Rod event planned for Sept. 13
Vineyard Community Church will hold a Biker and Hot Rod event Sept. 13 at the church, located at 15187 Palmer Road.
The event will include door prizes, a 50/50 drawing, children's slide and bounce house, grilled hot dogs and brats for sale, a watermelon eating contest, parade and biker ride.
Registration is $5 or a canned good. All proceeds will send local youth on a summer mission trip.

Boy Scouts celebrating 100
The Boy Scouts of America is celebrating its 100-year anniversary.
The local Boy Scout Council, Simon Kenton Council, is looking to re-connect with Boy Scouts. From now through December 2010 Simon Kenton Council is holding a major alumni search across central and southern Ohio and northern Kentucky.
The Simon Kenton Council plans to present Scouting alumni with a special lapel pin to commemorate this historic time in Scouting's history.

Bridge has come to Bexley
The Bexley-Eastmoor area now has its own ongoing Bridge game. Players gather at the JCC at 12:30 p.m. each Tuesday afternoon.
The game is open to all bridge players. If a partner is not available, players will be matched up with other players.
Duplicate Bridge rules apply and each game is scored separately, unlike scoring in Rubber Bridge.

Short term radon kits
The city of Bexley, in conjunction with the Franklin County Board of Health, has free, short term radon testing kits available for residents to check radon levels in their homes.
Radon is odorless, tasteless, and invisible, but it could be a problem in a home. Radon comes from the natural decay of uranium found in nearly all soils. According to to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, indoor radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. and leading cause among non-smokers.
