District creates finance accountability committee

(by Anne Holmes, staff writer - July 22, 2009)

Reynoldsburg Schools has created a finance accountability committee to provide transparency of district finances.

As part of the announcement, Reynoldsburg Schools Superintendent Stephen Dackin also reported on the state of the state budget process and its impact on the district at the school board's July 21 meeting.

Dackin said that he "can't complain about the state budget considering the economic situation."

Reynoldsburg will loose the equivalent of about one mil, or $770,000, over the next two budget years.

The district has reduced expenditures an additional $11 million on the heels of the previous $6 million in cuts made for a total of $17 million out of a $59-million operating budget in a district that has not had an influx of new revenue in 13 years Dackin reported.

He added that he is not aware of another district in the area that has made such deep cuts.
In response to community comments, a Finance Accountability Committee (FAC) is being formed and will hold its first meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 6.

The goal of this newly appointed committee of eight to 10 diverse members drawn from the community is to provide transparency of district finances. The district's books will be thrown open to public scrutiny.

The committee is advisory to the superintendent and treasurer.

Dackin noted that he is looking forward to input and commentary from the group.

In other news, representatives of the Band Boosters have requested clarification by the district as to how the $150 pay-to-play amount for the band was derived and what it includes. The boosters are concerned that current plans neither include provisions for taking the marching band to away games nor account for transportation to contest venues.

Documentation will be available July 24, including on the Web site at www.reyn.org, Dackin said.
