Sergeant graduates from Northwestern center
The Reynoldsburg Division of Police has announced the recent graduation of Sergeant Jeffrey Gregory from the School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC) at Northwestern University.
Jeffrey Gregory has successfully completed the 10-week Staff and Command program held in Columbus from March 2 through may 8.
This program, which was implemented by the Center for Public Safety in 1983, has graduated more than 9,000 students both nationally and internationally.
JCC to offer Silver Sneakers fitness program
The Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Greater Columbus is now offering the Silver Sneakers Fitness Program - the nation's leading exercise program designed exclusively for older adults.
"The program offers physical activity, health education and social events," said Linda Starr, JCC Member Services Director. "Individuals who are Medicare-eligible may qualify for The Silver Sneakers Program and receive a general senior adult membership to the JCC at no cost."
Starr added that Silver Sneakers members have access to the JCC's Diamond Family Fitness Center, including cardio and weight equipment, indoor and outdoor pools, and Silver Sneakers fitness classes, as well as group exercise and water fitness classes, racquetball and tennis courts, gymnasium and walking track. Members receive a free equipment orientation and fitness assessment, she said.
Starr and JCC Sports and Wellness Director Jeanna Brownlee will be available to answer any questions about Silver Sneakers and help members get enrolled in the program on July 6 from 10 a.m. to noon, and from 4 to 6 p.m., and by appointment.

Pickerington residents receive scholarships
Pickerington residents Matthew Gusler and Morgan Hunter recently received scholarships from the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio (BX). They were selected on the basis of financial need, academic achievement and potential future impact on the commercial construction industry.
Gusler, the son of Timothy and Lisa Gusler, is in his sophomore year and is studying engineering at Purdue University. Hunter, also in her sophomore year, is studying civil engineering at The Ohio State University. She is the daughter of David and Mimi Hunter.
This year, the member-funded program, administered by the Builders Exchange Foundation, awarded $49,250 to 47 students pursing construction related careers. Since 1959, the BX Scholarship Program has provided more than $800,000 in tuition assistance to students in construction-related fields of study. Scholarships ranged from $500 to $2,000 per student.
CJHS requesting items for spring historical exhibit
The Columbus Jewish Historical Society (CJHS) is requesting loans or donations of items that best represent the period between 1840 and 1910, for its exhibit next spring entitled, "170 Years of Jewish Life in Central Ohio, 1840 to 2010."
The exhibit will open April 12, 2010 at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Greater Columbus, 1125 College Ave.
"We are looking for anything from photos and paper materials to bushel baskets, kitchen utensils, and old grocery store items," Project Chair Toby Brief said. "Specifically, we're looking for items that were brought to the U.S. from the 'Old country,' such as mortars and pestles or trunks."
Brief noted that CJHS will arrange to pick up and return loans, as well as copy old photographs.
In addition, those with information and/or the desire to research Columbus' early German and Russian/Eastern European immigrants are invited to help with the exhibition.

Church offers free drive-in movies for families
Vineyard Community Church will hold free drive-in movies for families this summer.
The movies begin at 9:30 p.m. or dusk and take place at the church, located at 15187 Palmer Road, Reynoldsburg.
Movies to be shown are "Princess Bride" on July 10, "Monsters, Inc." on Aug. 7 and "WALL-E" on Aug. 28.
There will be 50/50 tickets fro sale to help offset the costs.

Biker and Hot Rod event planned for Sept. 13
Vineyard Community Church will hold a Biker and Hot Rod event Sept. 13 at the church, located at 15187 Palmer Road.
The event will include door prizes, a 50/50 drawing, children's slide and bounce house, grilled hot dogs and brats for sale, a watermelon eating contest, parade and biker ride.
Registration is $5 or a canned good. All proceeds will send local youth on a summer mission trip.

McKinley on Dean's list
Ashley McKinley of Reynoldsburg has made the Dean's list for the College of Nursing at The Ohio State University for both the fall and winter quarters of the 2008-2009 school year.
OSU graduate awarded pharmacy scholarship
Dennis Sperle, a June 2009 College of Pharmacy graduate from The Ohio State University, has been awarded a scholarship of $750 from a fund created in memory of OSU Pharmacy graduate and Columbus resident Joseph Nichol.
Nichol, a former co-owner of Eastmoor Pharmacy and a long-time member and board of director of the Beth Jacob Synagogue in Columbus, initiated a scholarship fund for OSU pharmacy students to help with their post graduate costs, most notably to pay for state licensing exam fees.
The scholarship was created through Rho Pi Phi, a national fraternity of students and pharmacy graduates dedicated to promote friendship, professionalism and community service.
The OSU alumni chapter of Rho Pi Phi, of which Nichol was a member, has dissolved, but the remaining funds from the scholarship were turned over to the university. Pharmacy college faculty choose the worthy graduate based on a set criteria, including good record and activities in the university setting and outside.
The scholarship was created in 1991. Nichol died in 2004. This is the first year the scholarship has been awarded in his memory.

Parent seminar to address children's health needs
The mental health and educational needs of children and adolescents diagnosed with Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), bipolar disorder, ADD/ADHD, depression and Asperger's Syndrome will be addressed at a parent seminar to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. July 9 at Brookwood Presbyterian Church, 2685 E. Livingston Ave.
Glenn Byers, who is experienced in providing mental health services through children services, counseling center, residential treatment centers, foster care agencies and educational centers, will help parents understand their treatment options and issues. Ellen Wristen, an attorney at law, will help parents understand their educational identification, service and placement options.
This parent seminar is offered at no charge, but reservations are required. Call the church office at (614) 235-3451 for reservations or additional information. Child care is not available.
Police holding blood drives
The Reynoldsburg Division of Police in conjunction with the American Red Cross will host a blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. July 6 in the main conference room of the Reynoldsburg Police Department located at 7240 E. Main St.

Bexley offering water aerobics class for older adults
Bexley will offer at water aerobics class from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Fridays, July 10 through Aug. 28 (except July 3) at the Bexley Pool, 2100 Clifton Ave.
There will be a total of eight classes at a cost of $63 for Bexley pool members and $67 for non-members.
Gail Rosenblum, a certified PACE instructor with the Arthritis Foundation and a certified water aerobics instructor, will introduce participants to one of the best types of exercise for older adults. The water is kept at a warmer temperature that makes this class very enjoyable as well as beneficial.
Bexley also offers a "Senior Swim" time before the crowd arrives from 11 to 11:45 a.m. June 26 through July 31. Cost is free to Bexley pool members and $3 for Bexley residents who are non-members.
During the Month of August, the pool will offer an open swim for older adults from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Monday through Friday Aug. 3-28. Cost is free to Bexley pool members and $3 for Bexley residents who are non-members.
Reynoldsburg offering football adult classes
The Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Reynoldsburg announces the start of enrollment in the upcoming adult education class for football.
The instructor will be Phil Kiser, an Ohio High School Athletic Association approved instructor in football.
Classes will be held at the Reynoldsburg Police Department, 7240 E. Main St., on Tuesday and/or Sunday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. Students must attend at least 80 percent of the classes.
First class will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 12 at the Reynoldsburg Police Department.
Cost of registration is $95 per student, which includes registration with the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
Students who successfully complete the requirements of the class will be certified to umpire high school football games for the season. Classroom instruction will include class discussion on the rules of the game as well as discussion and demonstration on the mechanics of officiating a football game.

The Shepard Community Association will meet at 10 a.m. the third Saturday of each month at Shepard/St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2260 E. Fifth Ave., Columbus. Boy Scouts celebrating 100
The Boy Scouts of America is celebrating its 100-year anniversary.
The local Boy Scout Council, Simon Kenton Council, is looking to re-connect with Boy Scouts. From now through December 2010 Simon Kenton Council is holding a major alumni search across central and southern Ohio and northern Kentucky.
The Simon Kenton Council plans to present Scouting alumni with a special lapel pin to commemorate this historic time in Scouting's history.

Bridge has come to Bexley
The Bexley-Eastmoor area now has its own ongoing Bridge game. Players gather at the JCC at 12:30 p.m. each Tuesday afternoon.
The game is open to all bridge players. If a partner is not available, players will be matched up with other players.
Duplicate Bridge rules apply and each game is scored separately, unlike scoring in Rubber Bridge.

Vineyard Community Church holding free clinics
Vineyard Community Church, 15187 Palmer Road, Reynoldsburg, is opening five new free clinics from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month.

Short term radon kits
The city of Bexley, in conjunction with the Franklin County Board of Health, has free, short term radon testing kits available for residents to check radon levels in their homes.
Radon is odorless, tasteless, and invisible, but it could be a problem in a home. Radon comes from the natural decay of uranium found in nearly all soils. According to to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, indoor radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. and leading cause among non-smokers.
