Weekend jam-packed with patriotic festivities

Whether it’s a one-day celebration or a three-day event, plans to celebrate Independence Day are in place all over the Madison County area.

West Jefferson
West Jefferson’s July 4th Streetfest features its traditional schedule, along with the addition of children’s games. The event is set for July 2-4 and will take place on South Center and Pearl streets.

Thursday, July 2
    5-11p.m.—Rides
    5 p.m.—Lolly the Clown 
    5 p.m.—Flag raising
    5 p.m.—Music by Tim & Shane Castle 
    7 p.m.—Music by Southern Trio Plus
    Friday, July 3

    5 p.m.—Music by Darwin Conley
    5 p.m. Children’s games on the Methodist Church lot (ages 4-11)

    Saturday, July 4
    10 a.m.—Parade lineup
    11 a.m.—Parade steps off

    1 p.m.—Car show
    12:30 p.m.—Union Highway Band
    1 p.m.—Lolly the Clown

    10 p.m.—Fire-works (rain date is July 5 at 10 p.m.)

Just as last year, Albanese Amuse-ments is providing the rides, and Ham-burg Fireworks is putting on the fire-works.

London
“This year’s fireworks show should be similar to the show we had two years ago,” said Melissa Noble, an organizer of London’s Patriotic Celebration, which will take place on July 3 at the London High School complex.

Once again, the London Parks and Recreation Department will host children’s activities sponsored by Stanley Electric from 4 to 8 p.m. Inflatables and interactive games are planned for all ages. The school’s Music Boosters will sell food from the home side concession stand.

Hamburg Fireworks will set off fire-works at dusk. A music soundtrack will play. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the show.

Mount Sterling
The Mount Sterling Community Center’s third annual “Spirit of Com-munity” celebration will take place on July 4 at the center, 164 E. Main St.
    9 a.m.—Parade lineup
    9-11 a.m.—Registration for the car show, flower exhibit, cornhole tournament, baking contest, Mr. and Miss Firecracker contest, quilt display and tractor show. The entry fee for each event is $5.
    10 a.m.—Parade steps off from Veterans Field, led by kids’ bikes and grand marshals Bob Webber and Louise Stoer
    11 a.m.-3 p.m.—All exhibits, shows and kids’ games open to the public at no charge.
    1 p.m.—Rock-n-Roll Trivia with John and David Timmons
    1-3 p.m.—Sterling Bluegrass Boys band performs. (Children who take part in the Community Center’s clowning camp the week of June 29 are invited to perform during the band’s break.)

Throughout the day, bratwurst, hotdogs, hamburgers, drinks and more will be sold. Silent auction bids can be placed on an American Heart quilt handmade by the Community Center’s quilting group. Larry Jewett will head up a Revolutionary War exhibit.

Plain City
Plain City will celebrate on July 4 at Pastime Park. The parade lineup starts at 2:45 p.m. at the Route 42 entrance to the park. The parade will step off at 3:30, head south into town, west on Main Street, and north on Park, coming full circle back to the park. To participate in the parade, call Kim Yoder at 614-348-9879.

The Little Miss and Mister contest is open to ages 7-10. Registration is required. Send e-mail to hoot6000@columbus.rr.com.

Inflatables and games for all ages, including Big Wheel races, hay bail races and balloon twisting, will run from 4 to 8:30 p.m.

“Outa Sync” will perform a variety of music from 6 to 9:30 p.m., followed by the fireworks at dusk.
