Much is new at 2009 St. Catharine Funfest

St. Catharine will once again hold its annual Funfest this year, with several new activities planned.

The event, in its 17th year, will be held from 5 to 11 p.m. June 4-6 at St. Catharine Parish, 500 S. Gould Road.

The yearly event draws nearly 10,000 visitors.

New this year are wine and margaritas, in addition to the event’s normal cold drinks.

The event also will feature a live band called “Next Exit,” as well as a four-screen climate controlled game truck where kids can play video games. On June 4, a new local band Mojoflow will perform from 8 to 11 p.m.

The parish’s pastor also has agreed to allow mass to be moved under the tent at 4 p.m. June 6, brining back an old tradition dating back to the first Funfest.

“We have expanded the ride selection and asked our ride provider to bring more rides and to also bring two ticket booths to reduce the waits in line,” said Steve Zehala, the chairman of the Funfest, in a news release.

The raffle grand prizes have been increased to $6,000 or full pay tuition for two students from the same family at St. Catharine School, an estimated $8,000 value.

The silent auction will be held in the gym June 5 and 6 and will feature items including golf outings for four, week-long vacations, sports memorabilia and autographed footballs.

The event will kick off at 5 p.m. June 4 with the parish’s chicken dinner. Other events include a talent show, art show and other family-friendly events.
