Canal Winchester Middle School students are used to going to pep rallies to cheer on their school teams, but on April 17 they were all part of a team - the Ohio Achievement Test team.
Rally for the Test organizers, a group of teachers, decided it was time for students to see themselves as part of a larger picture when they take the Ohio Achievement Tests (OAT).
The pep rally included a skit based on a game show that they called "Duh, or No Duh" and used teachers as models for students. During the skit teachers described a situation which could happen during the test. The audience yelled "Duh" if the teacher did something which ruined his or her chances of doing well on the test. Students became focused on the message that they should take their time and be prepared for the test.
Students also participated in a relay race which included the steps students should take to do their best on the test. Each team had to wake up, get dressed, eat a healthy breakfast, find #2 pencils and sharpen them, and fill in bubbles completely on a mock test form. Students cheered on their contestants as they completed against a team of teachers.
The students also created posters and learned about competing in an attendance contest to see which grade level could have the best attendance during testing week. That grade level will get to be a part of a drawing to see which of them gets to "pie a teacher." In addition, the winning grade level will be serenaded by the principals during lunch.
Teacher Kenny Phillips reminded students they were in control when they take the tests and the staff was rooting for them.
"We want you all to do the best you can - for yourself, for the school, and for our community," said Phillips.
