School and parks levys on May 5 ballot
On May 5, voters will decide on operating levys in the Groveport Madison Local School District, the Canal Winchester Local School District, and Metro Parks. About the levys:
Canal Winchester Schools
•Two year, 14.82 mill operating levy.
•Would generate $6.4 million per year.
•Would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $453 in additional taxes per year.
•If approved, the levy would help the district restore some of the budget cuts that have been made.
•The district has slashed $5 million from its operating budget in the last three years and could face another $2.4 million in cuts if the levy fails.
•The last time new operating monies were approved in the district was in 2001.
Groveport Madison Schools
•Three year, 9.36 mill operating levy that is a renewal with an increase of 3.9 mills on the existing 5.46 mill operating levy, originally approved in 1996 and which generates $4.5 million annually.
•The proposed 9.36 mill levy would generate an estimated $7.7 million per year and cost the owner of a $100,000 home an estimated $120 more per year at $9.95 additional per month.
•It has been 12 years since the district received additional property tax funds from the (existing) levy.
•Levy funds would be used to purchase new textbooks, increase the number and quality of student computers, and continue to improve student instruction as well as pupil/teacher ratios.
•The Groveport Madison Board of Education has made $1.4 million in cuts and will need to make more if the levy fails.
Metro Parks
•Ten year, 0.75 mill operating levy that would raise $21.5 million annually.
•Would cost the owner of a $100,000 home an additional $23 per year.
•Would fund operations of existing Metro Parks; expand educational programs; and acquire land and restore habitat along Rocky Fork Creek in northeast Franklin County, along Little Walnut Creek between Canal Winchester and Groveport, and along the Scioto River near Grove City.
