More employees extend contracts at SWCS


At a special meeting on April 1, the South-Western City School District Board of Education approved voluntary offers from its classified support staff and administrators to extend current contracts for one year, foregoing increases in hourly and salary rates. 

Board President Cathy Johnson remarked, "This action is again an example of the commitment our staff members have to our students and schools. We are fortunate to have such community-minded staff supporting our schools during these difficult economic times."

In early March, the members of the South-Western Administrators' Association (SWAA) voted to extend its current management team agreement for 16 months, making the new expiration date June 30, 2010.  

"We know community members have tightened their belts," stated SWAA President Bob Rains. "We are making this offer with the expectation that our community will partner with us and support our students through the passage of Issue 15 on May 5."

Last weekend, a majority of the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE) Local 211 voted to extend the current collective bargaining unit agreement for one year, making the new expiration date June 30, 2010.

OAPSE Local 211 President Sue Tope stated, "Our members are looking forward to continuing their efforts to support the students of the South-Western City School District." 

Both associations have endorsed Issue 15, the South-Western City Schools' 8.3-mill operating levy to be collected for four years on the May primary ballot, as has the South-Western Education Association (SWEA). 

South-Western's Superintendent Dr. Bill Wise and Treasurer Hugh Garside have already entered into agreements with the school board to forego raises for the next school year. 

Wise said, "We all need to work together to continue to offer the educational programming our students deserve."
