Bexley pool memberships changing

Bexley residents may soon share the community pool with their close friends who live outside city limits.
Families who live within Bexley will be able to sponsor one non-resident family to purchase a pool membership this summer.
This is one of several changes the Bexley Recreation Department is implementing in an effort to trim costs, increase revenue and be more environmentally friendly.
Since the building of the new David H. Madison Bexley Community Pool, one of the top requests has been to purchase memberships for family, close friends and neighbors who are not Bexley residents, said Michael Price, interim recreation director with the Bexley Recreation Department.
"Residents would have to come into the Recreation Department - not the pool - with the nonresident sponsored family," Price said.
The resident must fill out and sign a form, and then attach it to the pool membership form filled out by the nonresident, he said.
Shelter house
Beginning this month residents also must pay to rent the shelter house.
Effective March 16, the cost will be $20 per hour with a minimum of two hours. Only residents may reserve the shelter house.
In addition to generating revenue, Price said the move should cut back on the "blanket booking" the city has seen in the past, which will in turn free up more rental time for the community. Patrons are welcome to use the shelter house at no cost on a first come, first serve basis.
Program advertising
To trim costs and be environmentally friendly, the Bexley Recreation and Parks Department will no longer print brochures and deliver them through the newspaper.
Instead, Price said the information will be distributed in every Bexley water bill in a quarterly tri-fold flyer. The flyer will list all programs that are being offered in the upcoming season. The flyer also will direct residents to the department‚s Web site for program details and registration.
"Starting April 1, the water bill will have our newest list of rec programs," Price said. "At the same time, our newest brochure will go up on the Web site."
Tri-fold flyers also will be available at the schools, city hall, library and Jeffrey Mansion. Digital brochures are available online at www.recreation.bexley.org.
Bexley youth organization
The Recreation Department is in the initial stages of putting together a Youth Sports Summit. The focus, Price said, would be on the creation of a parent-lead youth organization to run Bexley's youth sports programs.
"This is in the very infant stages," Price said. "We have very few details about this other than we are looking at developing the youth organization."
The city has looked into the idea in the past, but is taking the next step of getting input from the public, Price said.
