Police make arrests in connection with vehicle thefts along S.R.

(by Rachel Scofield, Staff Writer - February 20, 2009)

Local residents would run inside a restaurant for take-out then return to find their car window shattered and their belongings taken.

The perpetrator continued to hit the parking lots of many businesses along S.R. 256 until Jan. 13. That day, Reynoldsburg Police arrested Craig Bellomy, age 32, and his accomplice Megan Dunaway - both from Columbus.

A search warrant of Bellomy's recovered 66 stolen items, said Detective Jeff Gammell of the Reynoldsburg police department.

Fairfield County indicted Bellomy and 22-year-old Dunaway with receiving stolen property. Both are in jail awaiting spring trials.

Bellomy's arrest "seems to have slowed things down for us" in terms of thefts, Gammell said. "We have been doing extra patrols (to ensure) it stays that way."

Criminals breaking into cars has been going on for years along the S.R. 256 corridor, but not frequently enough to indicate a crime wave, said Commander Ralph Portier of the Pickerington Police.
