Township trustee urges partnership with Reynoldsburg

(by Rachel Scofield, Staff Writer - February 11, 2009)

"We are neighbors - we should be able to work together," Etna Township trustee Paul George told the Reynoldsburg Council members at their Feb. 9 meeting.

George said he has wished for a relationship between the governments for a "long time," but his previous attempts failed. Now that the city has a new mayor and council, he wanted to try again.

Before the economy took a downturn, a developer approached Etna regarding building an industrial park on 250 acres near the I-70 and S.R. 310 interchange.

George said he would be happy to meet with any of the council members to discuss creating a Joint Economic Development District (JEDD) for that area.

JEDDs benefit cities because they receive income tax from land outside their boundaries and JEDDs benefit townships because they share the income tax that the city collects. Townships cannot collect income tax directly.

Councilman William Hills said he would be in favor of a partnership as Etna's last JEDD "went to Newark. We're neighbors and they're not."

In other news, the council approved $1.1 million for street improvements this summer. The streets to be repaired are:
• Main Street (from corporation limit to Rosehill Road)
• Summit Road (from Firstgate to the corporation limit)
• Rodebaugh Road (from just east of Brightstone to Rodebaugh Park)
• Beech Alley (from Main to South Street)
• Daylight Drive (from Kingsley to Glencrest)
• Glenview Street (from Glencrest to Goldsmith)
• Knob Avenue (from Rugosa to Hilltop)
• Starlight Drive (from Taylor to Morningdew)
• Priestly Drive (from west of Ruskin to the county line)
• Rosetree Drive (Rosehill to Olive Tree)
• Hammond Road (Laird to Clymer)
• Haft Road (Main to Bartlett).
