Parent seminar on school behavioral issues
A parent program entitled "School Is Starting - Now What?" will be presented at Brookwood Presbyterian Church, 2685 E. Livingston Ave. on Sept. 16 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
The program is designed to address a variety of new school year issues (often issues really left over from last school year). The program will address behavioral issues that lead to suspensions and/or expulsion, additional academic support in school through the title or special education program, school placement issues, school phobia, special education issues, social skill problems, bully victimization, school difficulties arising from a child's mental health difficulties with conditions such as ADD, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Autism, etc. and other matters of concern to parents.
The primary presenter will be Ellen Wristen, attorney at law. She, for over 20 years, has assisted parents facing all types of learning, placement and behavioral issues presented by their children at school.

Reynoldsburg VFW to hold vigil for POWs, MIAs
The Reynoldsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9473 will hold their annual POW/MIA Vigil on Sept. 14.
This event is held each year to allow the VFW and the community to remember our prisoners of war and missing in action. It is held in conjunction with other efforts across the nation to bring attention to the fact that we have many POW/MIAs unaccounted for.
The evening will begin at 7 p.m. This event will feature several speakers known to the Reynoldsburg area and the VFW. Ohio Department VFW Commander, Roger Fry, District 11 Commander Brad Price, Reynoldsburg VFW Commander, Ed Heckman and event organizer Steve Trimmer, along with Ohio Department Auxiliary President Marti Bridges, District 11 Auxiliary President, Fran Trimmer, and Reynoldsburg VFW Auxiliary President, Mary Shop. Reynoldsburg Mayor Bob McPherson will also speak.
After brief talks by the officials in attendance, candles are lit, "Taps" will be played and a 21-gun salute will be sounded. Color Guard units from all over central Ohio will be taking 15-minute watches guarding the American flag and the POW/MIA flag all through the night in honor of those Missing in Action and Prisoners of War. The vigil will end at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
The Ladies Auxiliary in support of the Color Guards will be providing food for them during the night, food donations will be accepted and appreciated. If you want to donate food contact Auxiliary President Mary Shop at 402-7993 to arrange pick-up or drop-off.
Military Officers Club
The Military Officers Club of Central Ohio will hold its next meeting Sept. 14 with a dinner/dance at the American Legion Post 532, 1571 Demorest Road, Columbus.
Reservations with an application fee of $15, plus $7 for spouses, are due by Sept. 10.
Luncheon meetings are held the second Friday of the month at the Berwick Manor Party House at Refugee Road and Winchester Pike.
The local chapter represents 344 retired military officers, widows and widowers and a ladies' auxiliary. The organization was founded in 1953 and provides members with legislative information, local news, information on survivorship benefits, and speakers, including members of Congress and local journalists.

Orbiting Squares offers 2 free square dancing lessons
Starting Sept. 12, the Orbiting Squares and the Westerville Promenadors Western Square Dancing Clubs will be offering instructions on Wednesday evenings, from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Whitehall Community Park, 402 N. Parkview Ave.

•"Uncloaked," complied, adapted and directed by Communication Professor Dan Heaton, Oct. 11-14.
In "Uncloaked," Heaton looks at the various versions and psychological underpinnings of the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. Although the show deals with a classic fairy tale, this performance is not appropriate for children.
•"Little Shop of Horrors," the musical about a flower shop schlep and the man-eating plant he creates by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, Nov. 15-18.
•"Twelfth Night," a comedy by William Shakespeare, Feb. 14-17.
•One-Act Play Festival, a series of student-directed plays, April 17-20.
Thursday and Friday performances are at 8 p.m. Saturday performances are at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday performances are at 2 p.m.

Ebony Fashion Show benefits Children's Hospital
Twig 110 of Children's Hospital will be sponsoring the 50th Annual Ebony Fashion Fair on September 16, at 6 p.m. at the Southern Theatre, 21 E. Main Street. All proceeds benefit Children's Hospital.

Cleveland author to speak at book fair
Cleveland author Les Roberts will be signing his books and giving two presentations at the third annual Columbus Book Fair on Sept. 8, at the Martin Luther King Arts Complex, 876 Mount Vernon Ave.
Roberts, who has written the Jacovich and Saxon novels and his memoir "We'll Always Have Cleveland," will give a presentation on mystery writing at 8:50 a.m., and speak on screenwriting at 2:25 p.m.
Also speaking are public relations expert Jill Lublin, children's author/illustrator Nancy Carlson, and Dave Sanders, a poet and director of the Ohio University Press.
Lublin, author of "Guerilla Publicity" that is designed to help individuals and companies get the most out of their publicity with the least investment, will speak on "Power Publicity" at both of her sessions, at 10:20 a.m. and at 4:55 p.m.
Carlson, from Edina, Minn., who has written and illustrated more than 50 books, will speak on "Writing for Children" at 9:35 a.m. and then have a drawing session at 1:20 p.m.
Sanders, who been director of the Ohio University Press since 1995, will give a poetry reading and lead a writing exercise.
The book fair, sponsored by Writers Ink, is open to the public without charge. It will be held from 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Area authors can purchase tables where they will be able to sign and sell their books.

Friends of Alum Creek bike ride
The Friends of Alum Creek & Tributaries (FACT) will lead a free family bike ride leisurely touring the newest part of the Alum Creek greenway trail, followed by a picnic, on Sept. 9, from 1 to 5 p.m.
Bikers will depart Pumphouse Park near Bexley (2025 E. Main Street - SE corner of Alum Creek Drive) at 1:30 p.m. and travel the dedicated paved path for about four miles to the northern perimeter of Three Creeks Park (near SR 104/33 & Performance Way) and back.
A complimentary BBQ picnic will be held upon return at Pumphouse Park shelter.
Donations are encouraged to benefit FACT and help offset costs. Vehicle parking available at adjacent AFL-CIO Union building lot (620 Alum Creek Drive).
The scenic recreational route follows the Alum Creek river corridor, passing through forests, meadowlands, several ponds, and has only two at-grade road crossings. Riders are encouraged to wear regulation bicycle helmets, observe all rules of the road, and follow safe riding practices
FACT is a community based not-for-profit organization serving as the environmental volunteer steward for the Alum Creek watershed within Franklin and Delaware counties.

"Breaking the Chain of Shame" book release reception
The book "Breaking the Chain of Shame" will be released by The Voice Publications, targeting the Christian and secular market, this August and a reception for the book's release will be held Sept. 7,at the Jeffrey Mansion, 165 N. Parkview Ave. Bexley, at 7pm.

Mothers of Multiples meets
The Mothers of Multiples of East Columbus meets the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m., at the Church of the Redeemer United Methodist, 235 McNaughten Road (south of Broad Street), for social time, a business meeting, and speaker or group activity.
The group produces a monthly newsletter for members, offers many social family and moms-only events, and hosts a clothing, toy and equipment sale twice a year.

Capital's Schumacher Gallery announces 2007-08 season
Capital University's Schumacher Gallery has announced its schedule of exhibits for the 2007-08 season.
"East of Eden: Contemporary Ohio Landscape Painters" will be presented Sept. 4-Oct. 12.
Featured artists include Eric Barth, Ed Charney, Alan Gough, Jane Heller, M. Katherine Hurley, John Kortlander, William Kortlander, Gregg Kumlien, Ober-Rea Starr Livingston, Chuck Marshall, Kelly Moody, Stephen Pentak, Jenny Reynolds, Robert Robbins, Edwin C. Shuttleworth and Ernest Viveiros.
An opening reception will be held Sept. 7 from 5-7 p.m.
"Some Assembly Required," with artists using non-traditional materials to explore the potential of collage and assemblage, will run from Oct. 29-Dec. 7. An opening reception will be held Nov. 2 from 5-7 p.m.
"Beyond Boundaries," featuring self-taught artists who use unconventional subjects, techniques and materials, will be presented Jan. 11-Feb. 15. The exhibit, co-sponsored by Art Access, will have an opening reception Jan. 11 from 5-7 p.m.
"Art on a String," with Asian kites in a variety of imaginative shapes associated with festivals, holidays and special events, will take flight March 3-April 11. An opening reception will take place March 7 from 5-7 p.m.
Capital University's Student Art Exhibition will be held April 18-26, with a meet-the-artists reception April 18 from 5-7 p.m.
The Schumacher Gallery, which includes an extensive permanent collection of European, American, Asian, African and Inuit art, is located on the fourth floor of the Blackmore Library. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 1-5 p.m., during the school year. Admission is free.
Bexley Library children's programs
Fall programming for children ages 9 months through 5 years will begin the week of September 17, at Bexley Public Library, 2411 East Main Street. Registration is currently underway for Babytime, Toddler and Preschool Storyhours. These programs require advance registration since group size is limited. Register in person at the library or by calling the Children's Department at 231-2878.
Babytime is a program for children ages 9 to 24 months and their caregivers and meets on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. for stories, songs and rhymes. Themes will include things that go, farms, and mice.
Toddler Storyhour is a program for 2-year-olds and an adult. This 30-minute program is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. Activities include stories, fingerplays, songs and simple crafts. Stories about weather, cats and trees will be featured.
Three to five-year-old children may participate in Preschool Storyhours held on Mondays at 2:00 p.m., Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. Stories, games, fingerplays and crafts are all part of this 45-minute program. Fall themes will include squirrels, scarecrows and apples.
"Explorer's Club," a program for kindergarten through third grade, will begin September 26. The one-hour programs are on Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. Topics to be explored during the six-week fall series include dinosaurs, woodland animals and cowboys. This program does not require pre-registration.

Lecture on community engagement at United Way office
Mike Green, author and national speaker, will present an interactive session on "Twelve Guiding Principles for Community Engagement" and "When People Care Enough to Act" on Sept. 20, from 6 - 9 p.m at United Way of Central Ohio, 360 S. Third Street.
He offers a unique set of experiences and skills with Asset Based Community Development related work. For information or to make a reservation, call 241-3072.
Whitehall Chamber of Commerce golf outing, annual meeting
The Whitehall Area Chamber of Commerce announces the return of its annual golf outing. The outing will take place Sept. 14 at Cumberland Trail Golf Course in Pataskala.
The tournament will be a four-person scramble format with a cost of $70 per person. This fee includes golf and cart, beverages (beer and soda), lunch, snacks and goodie bags.
Registration will begin at noon and the tournament will have a shot gun start at 1 p.m. Prizes will be given for the top three teams, longest drive, closest to the pin, longest putt and hole in one.
Sign up is taking place now and the deadline to register and pay is Aug. 30. Call the chamber at 237-7792 to register.
The chamber is also looking for volunteers, door prizes and sponsors for this event. There will be some great advertising opportunities. Call the office for details.
The chamber's annual meeting will be held Sept. 20 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Whitehall Community Park, 402 N. Hamilton Road. The meeting will feature Andrea Cambern as keynote speaker speaking on "Commit to Be Fit."
The meeting will also include presentation of the annual Beautification Awards and voting for open Board of Trustees positions. You may RSVP or get more information by calling the chamber. There will be board positions available, so be sure to call if you are interested. You must be in your second year of membership to qualify.
Marc Levison Run/Walk seeks sponsors, participants
The 5th Annual Marc Levison 5K Run/Walk for Lou Gehrig's Disease will take place Sept. 2, at 8:30 a.m., and is looking for sponsors to help raise money for research at Children's Hospital into the debilitating disease.
Lou Gehrig's Disease, or ALS, affects the neurological system. Marc Levison, a Bexley resident, has had the disease for about 18 years. Traveling the streets in a motorized wheelchair, Marc is one of the most recognizable figures in Bexley.
The race has raised close to $90,000 for research on motor neuron diseases like ALS at Children's Research Institute at Children's Hospital. All proceeds above the cost of the race are donated for research.
ALS has no cure and it is not clear what causes it.

East High Class of 1977 reunion
The Columbus East High Tigers Class of 1977 is announcing its 30-year reunion, taking place Labor Day weekend at Briarwood Banquet Facility, 1421 Davidson Drive, Reynoldsburg.
The three-day event includes Aug. 31, Meet and Greet 7 p.m - midnight; Sept. 1 semi-formal dinner, 7 p.m.-midnight; and family picnic Sept. 2.
The price is $90 per alumni and an additional $45 for guests. The price includes all three days plus a 1977 Alumni East High Tigers t-shirt.

Reynoldsburg High Class of '82 25-year reunion
The Reynoldsburg High School Class of 1982 25-year reunion will be held Oct. 12-14.
Class members will meet at the Reynoldsburg High football game Oct. 12, and following the game will gather at Donerick's Pub House, 6935 E. Broad St.

Holiday Bazaar vendors sought
The JCC Early Childhood Parent committee is seeking vendors for its annual Holiday Bazaar Nov. 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Holiday Bazaar showcases the work of artisans from across central Ohio. Each vendor has the opportunity to display and sell their goods during the bazaar, which is free and open to the community.

Belly dancing class for men and women
The JCC is offering a belly dancing demonstration class Aug. 30, from 5 to 6 p.m., and on Aug. 31, from 10 to 11 a.m.
Men and women who want to burn calories and have fun working out, are welcome to attend this demo class.
The class is open to the public and will be limited to the first 25 registrants. Reservations and payments must be made in advance at the JCC.
If this is a popular program, the JCC will be offering it on a more regular basis in six week sessions.

JCC seeks artwork from members for juried show
Artists - both amateur and professionals - will have the opportunity to showcase their talent this fall at the premiere of the JCC Juried Member Art Exhibit.
A jurist is being selected by the committee from outside the JCC membership to choose which pieces of art will be put on display.
JCC members may submit up to two pieces of their artwork for consideration. Artwork may be dropped off at the JCC's front desk for consideration for the exhibit on Sept. 18 and Sept. 19, from 4 to 8 p.m. All types of artistic media are welcome, and must be ready for display.
The artwork selected will be placed on exhibit in the JCC lobby fromOct. 7 through Nov. 4.

Kinderclub, Kaleidoscope for kindergarten through sixth-grade
When elementary school is out, Kinderclub and Kaleidoscope at the JCC are in and offering a structured, fun and creative curriculum that engages and encourages continued learning experiences and completing daily homework.
Kinderclub is designed for kindergarten-age children (ages 5 to 7) and is led by experienced, degreed teachers. Flexible options are available: from noon to 3 p.m., noon to 6 p.m., and 4 to 6 p.m. Kaleidoscope is offered Monday through Friday, from 3 to 6 p.m., for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.
Both programs are open to non-Jewish families. Kinderclub offers a family style hot kosher lunch, special Shabbat and holiday celebrations, swimming twice each week, a weekly library trip, arts and crafts activities, stories, drama, puzzles, games, and an occasional field trip.
Kaleidoscope does more than just provide students with homework assistance. They have special events, swimming, a low ropes course, a ball pit, a climbing wall, and scavenger hunts in the new, Mercaz Zusman all-purpose building, with new programs.
Kinderclub is offered at both the main JCC campus at 1125 College Ave., in Bexley, and at the JCC New Albany at 79 N. High St., in the Columbus Jewish Day School (CJDS).
Transportation to the main campus is provided by the JCC van from Bexley schools and St. Catherine's Elementary. Other students at local private or public schools should plan on parent-provided transportation.
Kaleidoscope is offered at all three JCC locations, including the JCC North at 1985 Swansford Dr., Dublin.

JCC hosts antique appraisal show
The JCC is hosting a local antique appraisal show Aug. 28, from 1 to 3 p.m., featuring appraisals by the Estate Group of Ohio and Janine Aquino.
Items to be appraised include: art glass; jewelry; ceramics and pottery; photographs; manuscripts; autographs; furniture; fine paintings; folk art; vintage clothing; decorative arts, such as fine porcelain; crystal and silver; oriental rugs; rare books or coins; comic books; original comic art; sports cards and memorabilia; political memorabilia and Americana; vintage toys and charter collectibles; and fine sculptures.
Due to the popularity of this program, only one item per person will be appraised. The entry fee is $5 and reservations are required. Light refreshments will be provided.
