Kite Festival floats on air

(by Pat Donahue, staff photographer - April 05, 2008)

Lowell Dillion (left) joined in on the fun at the St. John’s Lutheran Church Kite Festival on March 29. Lowell, shown here reeling in his bi-plane kite, said it’s been 35 years since he last flew a kite. He was one of many to take part in the event, which was put on by the church with the help of Kite Man Productions.

A huge octopus kite was quite an attraction at the Kite Festival. The owner of the kite and the promoter of the event, “Tree” Alexander, pulled it in so children could get a closer look. The 22-year-old novelty kite was one of three kites that appeared in the motion picture “Snow Dogs.”

St. John’s Lutheran Church Pastor Steve Smithberger and 12-year-old Jake Datz try their hand at engineering and flying a homemade kite.

Christopher Ernst, 6, is joined by his grandmother, Linda Ward, in watching his kite float over St. John’s Lutheran Church in London, the site of a Kite Festival held on March 29 Kite Festival.
