SWCS get organized
At the Jan. 7 organizational meeting, the South-Western City School District Board of Education named its new president.
Board member Cathy Johnson was elected board president and William (Greg) McCarty was named vice president. They will both serve a one-year term.
The board also welcomed two new members. Randy Reisling was given the oath of office by Johnson. Mindy Garverick was sworn in by Wayne Stuntz, the associate pastor of the Grove City United Methodist Church.
Board members were also assigned to committees. Johnson will work on the policies committee, McCarty will serve on the fiscal and operational management committee, Garverick will work on facilities development and serve as the student achievement liaison, Reisling will take over the students/school/community and personnel committee, and board member Amy Baker will take on curriculum.
At the organizational meeting, the board adopted its 2008 meeting calendar. The board will hold regular meetings the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the District Service Center, 3805 Marlane Dr. in Grove City. The fourth Monday of the month, the board usually holds a work session at the district office, which also begins at 7 p.m.

In other news
•The board submitted a list of 2008 permanent improvement projects to the Franklin County Budget Commission.
The district budgeted $1.1 million for improvements to buses and $1.2 for textbooks. They have also appropriated $350,000 for technology, $150,000 for classroom furniture, $150,000 for copiers, $600,000 for roof replacements and $700,000 for miscellaneous building improvements.
•The board set aside $35,000 for the service fund.
“Most of this money is spent on awards the board gives to students,” said Johnson.
•The board also approved a motion to renew their membership with the Ohio School Board Association (OSBA).
