At London High School, modern day communication begat a centuries-old play selection.

“I had several students ask about doing ‘Romeo and Juliet’ for the fall play. One of the students put the question on Facebook, and it got over 20 likes,” said director Scott Blanton. “As an English teacher, I was really excited about doing it, and it allows us to have another large cast.”

One of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays, “Romeo and Juliet” tells the story of star-crossed lovers whose deaths bring their feuding families together. Blanton said his cast, a mixture of young students and tried-and-true senior actors, is making good on the selection.

While the 27-member cast will wear contemporary costumes and wield knives instead of swords, they are sticking true to Shakespeare’s text—1500s-style English and all.

“We take time each scene to work through the language. Once they know what they’re talking about, then we do blocking,” Blanton said.

While the actors have been hard at work, so have students in Ben McCoy’s woods class. They’re building the set, including a backdrop designed to look like a London street scene.

“We’re excited to perform for the community,” Blanton said.

The cast includes: Maura Beach, Jordan Benedum, Elizabeth Bennett, Sarah Case, Hayden Conley, Cassie Dencher, Sam Dencher, Alicia Ferguson, Arielle Frederick, James George, Jacob Green, Jonathan Green, Cheyenne Greenwell, Ginny Held, Delaney Hill, Parker Hughes, Andrea King, Courtney McPeek, Kayley Murray, Corey Patterson, Jessica Reed, Cameron Salimbene, Jack Spahn, Adam Throckmorton, Aaron To, Dalton Watson and Kyle Weese.

Ashish Patel and Rachael Wood are in charge of lights and sound.
