Photo: Jackson Twp. firefighters receive valor award

Captain Randy Little and firefighter Jason Burley of the Jackson Township Fire Department received valor awards at Ohio’s 32nd annual Ohio Fire Service Hall of Fame ceremonies on Sept. 20. On May 21, 2011, their department was dispatched to a house fire on Gantz Road with two children trapped inside. A parent who escaped told the firefighters where the children had been sleeping. Little and Burley made multiple attempts reaching the second floor bedroom, but deteriorating conditions kept driving back crews. The incident commander and safety officers prepared to remove all firefighters from the structure, when Little and Burley made one last attempt to rescue the children. They climbed a ladder to the second floor bedroom window, with the assistance of a crew on the hose line. While debris began to fall and the fire spread into the bedroom, Little discovered the children and passed them both to Burley, who took them to waiting medical crews.
