West Jeff swamp oak named 2010 Heritage Tree

(Posted May 13, 2010)

Madison County Master Gardener Barbara Janko (far left) helps three Norwood Elementary fourth-graders—Mary Kronk, Taylor Watts and Casey Chaffins—measure this year’s Madison County Heritage Tree honoree, a swamp oak in West Jefferson’s Westwood Park. They measured its circumference at 170 inches and calculated its height to be 63 feet.
West Jefferson Parks Director nominated the tree for the program, launched in 2009 to build awareness for the value of the county’s trees and to encourage residents and businesses to plant trees. The first honoree was a 107-foot tall larch at Forest Grove Cemetery on Cemetery Pike near Plain City.
Heritage Tree program representatives join Norwood Elementary students and teachers in a group shot at the base of the mighty swamp oak.
