Tomato Festival to feature beer garden
(by Christine Bryant, Eastside Editor - July 09, 2012)
This year’s Tomato Festival will feature a beer garden.
The Reynoldsburg Community Association is coordinating volunteers who will man the beer garden, and the Tomato Festival will share a portion of the profits with that organization, said Mary Hudson, director of the Reynoldsburg Visitors Bureau.
“The beer garden will be located in the northeast corner of the festival grounds by the bike path,” she said. “It is away from the children’s area and patrons will be able to see the stage and the entertainment.”
The beer garden will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. Aug. 17 and from noon to 10 p.m. Aug. 18.
Hudson said organizers got the city’s OK during a special council meeting July 2. The beer garden is expected to boost proceeds for the festival.
In other news, Tomato Festival organizers are seeking bands to compete in its first Battle of the Bands event.
The “Tomato Jam” will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 18 at Huber Park. Bands interested in participating must submit audition tapes by July 31.
Bands will be judged on pre-ticket sales, crowd voting and onsite judges. The winner of the 2012 Tomato Jam will open for McGuffey Lane the Saturday night of the festival, Aug. 18.
First- and second-place winners will receive a gift certificate or musical instrument from Guitar Center.
Bands interested in applying must submit a completed application and video of two songs. The video must include all band members participating in the Tomato Jam.
Applications may be found at reynoldsburgtomatofestival.org/forms2011.html.
The Reynoldsburg Tomato Festival Entertainment Committee will select eight bands to participate in the Tomato Jam.
The 2012 Reynoldsburg Tomato Festival will take place from 4 to 10 p.m. Aug. 17 and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 18.
It will feature a variety of activities, including a teen pool party, entertainment, queen contest, Columbus Zoo animals, a cruise-in, family movie, displays, food and kids’ activities.
Hudson said volunteers still are needed for the festival. For more information on how to volunteer, or information about activities at the Tomato Festival, go to www.reynoldsburgtomatofestival.org.
