Authentic Edge: Explore local events this summer

The summer is heating up with plenty of outdoor activities in the city of Columbus.
However, there are some people who complain there is not much going on, and instead, travel to other locations through the summer months.
I travel a lot myself, but I also recognize the entertainment our city offers and would encourage more people to get involved.
There is something for everybody. There is no reason to be stuck in the house from boredom or traveling furiously to get away.
One of my favorite events is Juneteenth. It celebrates African-American independence every year at Franklin Park. There are three days of Carribbean music, food and exhibits that showcase black inventors.
With such a variety of activities including movies, and fitness workouts in the Columbus Commons, as well as festivals, you are bound to find an event that appeals to your interests.
The annual Red, White and Boom! celebration, the Jazz and Rib Fest in the Arena District and Latino Festival at Genoa Park are a few big events that are summer favorites.
I’ve been attending the Latino Festival for more than five years. Since I was a teenager. Paella, which is a Spanish rice dish, is my favorite and I get it ever year I go.
I was born in a small city called Escondido in California, so I have personal connections to the Hispanic culture.
I’m passionate about cultural diversity and speak Spanish. This leads me to enjoy seeing all the diversified events in Columbus.
If you’re not a fan of large crowds, explore some of the bike trails, or play a sport with a friend at one of the many recreational parks.
Don’t feel obligated to leave for vacation all the time. Instead, take the vacation time to explore more of what are city has to offer.
The best part about most of these events is that entry is free.
As Columbus celebrates its bicentennial this year, things are expected to be even bigger and better, which means it’s guaranteed to be a great time this summer—and potentially cheaper than an out of town vacation.
So, this summer save some money and stay in the city.
