Public open house set at new Deercreek Township hall

(by Kristy Zurbrick, Madison Editor - January 26, 2012)

The exterior of the new Deercreek Township hall and community center was designed to look like a train station in homage to the Interurban train station once located in Lafayette.

Township trustee Robert Tuvry Jr. sets up chairs and tables for the assembly room’s first use by an outside group.

The public is invited to attend an open house set for 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 4 at the new Deercreek township hall and community center, 75 Middle St. SE, Lafayette.

A ceremony at 2 p.m. will review the township’s history and details of the building project. The architect and builder will be on hand. Additionally, the township trustees have invited past trustees to attend.

The stick frame, 2,400 square-foot building sits between the Central Townships Joint Fire District station and the township shop and equipment storage building. Crews broke ground on the project in July and completed it in October.

The trustees have been holding their regular meetings at the hall. The Madison County Townships Association was the first outside group to use it, meeting there on Jan. 8. Civic groups are welcome to use the facility at no charge.

“We have two 4-H groups that used the meeting area in the fire house that will now meet in the new building,” said trustee Robert Turvy Jr.

Starting soon, the hall also will be available to the public to rent for events like birthday parties, wedding receptions, bridal showers and family gatherings. The rental fee for residents is $50; for non-residents, $100.

The assembly room can hold 56 people when tables and chairs are set up or 120 people with chairs only. The adjoining break room contains a refrigerator, sink and microwave. Men’s and women’s rest rooms are located down the hall. A small patio sits off the back of the assembly room.

The facility also contains an office and meeting area for the township trustees and fiscal officer. Former trustee Tom Cecil is building custom, wood filing cabinets for the space.

Altogether, the project—a joint venture of the township trustees and Madison County Future Inc., a community improvement corporation (CIC)—cost just over $300,000, including furnishings.

Originally, the estimated cost for the building with a gravel parking lot and two paved handicap parking spots was $320,000, Turvy said. Because bids came in under that estimate, the trustees and CIC paved the entire parking lot, added full sidewalks in the front and back of the building, and made some interior upgrades.

Turvy said future plans include construction of a shelterhouse on the property. The trustees also plan to hang a large plaque in the hall that lists everyone who has served as a trustee in Deercreek Township.
