WABA preps for annual scholarship fundraiser

(by Sandi Latimer, staff writer - November 17, 2011)

The Westland Area Business Association’s (WABA) annual fundraising dinner and auction will be held March 10 at the Mentel Memorial Golf Course.

The fundraiser carries the theme “Westland Side Story.”

At the Nov. 15 WABA meeting, members searched for unique prizes that will be offered in a raffle, along with baskets of donated items for the silent auction.

Proceeds from the auction and raffle go to the South-Western Education Fund, which provides scholarships for high school students in the district.

This fundraiser event is the signature event for WABA. The dinner and auction has raised around $25,000 in past years.

At previous events, attendees have dressed in costume according to the night’s theme. Board members wondered if local supporters would wear the attire worn by the  Sharks and the Jets, or the full-skirt dresses that Anita and Maria wore.

The event in March is open to the public with the purchase of a ticket. Hors d’oeuvres will be served at 5:30 p.m. while attendees place bids at the silent auction.

Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. with a live auction to follow.

“Bid early, bid often,” is this year’s motto.
