Two local residents have teamed up to fight hunger through a new program, the Books for Bread Project. The pair plans to donate all proceeds from their newly created children’s book to the Grove City Food Pantry during the Town Center’s Mistletoe Market Dec. 2.
Author Janet Shailer and illustrator Bob Johnson have written “Mrs. Doobitty Goes To Central Market” based on the local history of farm families selling their goods at the old Central Market in downtown Columbus. The book recreates a time when food was taken to market by horse and wagon.
The books are free in exchange for a donation of any amount to the Grove City Food Pantry. The books will be available in the lower level of City Hall on Dec. 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. before and after the Winter Lights parade.
Shailer and Johnson plan to continue their drive to fight hunger by donating books to churches and service groups willing to use them to raise funds for local food pantries.
“The amount of food necessary to assist needy families has greatly increased in the last year,” Shailer said. “We hope to make a small difference.”
