Mayor Coleman announces curbside-recycling program
Columbus residents were introduced to a new curbside-recycling program on Nov. 10.
Implementation of the program will begin in late spring, with recyclables being collected every other week. Yard waste will be collected on the weeks that recycling is not collected.
The recycling program amounts to $1.44 per household each month and $1.14 per household for yard waste. That cost does not include tipping fee savings. These costs will be included in Mayor Michael Coleman’s 2012 budget proposal.
Each route will phase in starting with residents who receive yard waste collection on Monday. Those who receive yard waste service on Tuesday, Wednesday and so on will follow. It is expected to take approximately one year to fully implement the program to all 227,000 households.
Including the tipping fee, the recycling program could cost between $700,000 and $2.9 million for 2012. The yard waste program will cost approximately $1.9 million.
This program is the first step to a cross-jurisdictional recycling plan. The proposal is designed so surrounding communities may join it at a lower cost than many are now paying for recycling services.
