Harmon ES collects pop can tabs for Ronald McDonald House
Fourth-grade student council members, Audrey Lewis, Brian Nichols, Khao Sisomphone and Michael Drennen combine and weigh pop can tabs. So far, the students have collected 10 pounds of tabs.
Students at Harmon Elementary School are collecting pop can tabs to support the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) through Nov. 22.
This year Coca-Cola launched an initiative for the Columbus House to battle the Michigan House. The winner will receive $1,000 toward its school.
This is the fourth year the school participated in the program. Last year the school collected almost 10 pounds of pop can tabs.
Harmon Elementary heard about the service opportunity a few years ago when RMHC spoke at a school assembly.
RMHC is a national organization with chapters throughout the country and has a goal to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children.
The central Ohio chapter serves families with seriously ill children by providing a home-away-from-home at the Columbus Ronald McDonald House.
Krissy Bach, co-advisor for student council at Harmon Elementary said the service opportunity is aligned to the nine different virtues the school seeks to teach their students.
These nine virtues include respect, responsibility, honesty, giving, trustworthiness, kindness, perseverance, compassion, and self-discipline.
“I think the most rewarding part of this opportunity is that the students feel good when they know they are helping someone or something bigger than themselves,” Bach said.
Twenty-two student council members will assist with the weighing and delivery of the pop can tabs.
After the tabs are collected, the local RMHC chapter takes the collection to local recycling centers where the value is determined in return for a check to the local chapter.
Aluminum tabs from soups, vegetable, fruit or pet foods are also accepted and can be dropped off to Harmon Elementary School by Nov. 22 or directly to Central Ohio Ronald McDonald House Charities by Nov. 26.
