Late minister Gladden explored at Green Lawn program
The life and work of the Rev. Washington Gladden, who served as minister of the First Congregational Church on East Broad Street for some 35 years, will be explored at the First Saturday at Green Lawn Program Oct. 1.
First Saturday is the monthly historical program that delves into the lives of people who left their mark on Columbus history and who are interred at Green Lawn Cemetery, 1000 Greenlawn Ave.
Presenting the free program at 11 a.m. in Green Lawn’s Huntington Chapel will be the Rev. Timothy Ahrens, current pastor of the church.
Gladden was known for his involvement in social and community issues as well as writing hymns still sung in church services.
The Gladden family is among the 150,000 people buried at the state’s second-largest cemetery established in 1848. The cemetery began with 83 acres and as grown to 360 with 80 of them yet to be developed.
