Two Prairie Twp. streets could be upgraded
(by Sean Lehosit, Westside Editor - August 11, 2011)
Prairie Township scheduled a public hearing Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. for the discussion of two possible road improvement projects in the coming year.
Trustees approved a task order June 29, which allowed Stantec Consulting to prepare two grant applications for the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC).
One applications is for the complete reconstruction of Woodlawn Avenue and the second is for Beacon Hill Drive.
Prairie Township could be awarded one, both, or none of the grants.
If one application is accepted, then it is likely the remaining application would be subitted again in 2013.
According to Tracy Hatmaker, administrator of Prairie Township, both roads are suffering from poor drainage and unsafe road conditions.
The projects include the re-grading and resurfacing of the street and the installation of gutters on the curbs, tying them into existing storm sewers. Hatmaker said the gutters will help direct water runoff better than the usage of catch basins.
“It’s a complete and total upgrade,” Hatmaker said, adding the projects would also add 4 foot sidewalks for pedestrian safety.
Plans to improve Woodlawn Avenue have been on the table for nearly three years and a grant has been submitted twice already, compared to Beacon Hill Drive, which has been talked about finishing for several months.
“We’ve been systematically going through the older neighborhoods,” Hatmaker said.
The total cost of either project is not conclusive yet, as Stantec Consulting is still in the process of their study.
An OPWC grant is three quarters grant and one quarter, Hatmaker said, which the loan part must be paid back within 20 years at zero percent interest.
Township looking for zoning alternates
According to Hatmaker, the township is looking for two individuals to fill alternate positions for the zoning commission and board of zoning appeals.
The duties of the zoning commission are to make recommendations to the trustees based on the comprehensive plan and making amendments on zoning code.
Zoning appeals makes recommendations to the trustees on variances on zoning code requested from individuals.
