The Westland Area Commission (WAC) welcomed a new member June 15, and continued plans for the Independence Day celebration July 2.
David Van Order, who has lived in the Westland area for 21 years, had expressed interest in being a commissioner for quite a while.
“Now that my two daughters are through high school, I’ll have more time,” Van Order said.
Van Order added he felt morally obligated to do something for his community.
He will serve a one-year term and then will be eligible to run for a three-year term of the body that is a liaison between the Westland community and the Columbus City Council.
WAC also gave the go ahead to create a booth for the July 2 post-parade celebration at Westland High School, where members will hand out information about the commission’s work.
Columbus Recreation and Parks will provide a display for the booth pertaining to Broad Street Park.
WAC President Linda Pitts said they will be taking ideas for the park’s name, which will then be drawn and considered.
