Metro Parks held a grand opening ceremony Oct. 25 for the new nature center at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park, located on Darby Creek Drive (off of Route 40, east of West Jefferson).
With the bison in the background, Metro Parks Executive Director John MOmeara presides over the formal opening of the Battelle Darby Creek Park nature center.
A 53-foot living stream, featuring plant and animals species found in Big Darby Creek, serves as the focal point of the new nature center.
Jack McDowell, a West Jefferson resident and longtime Metro Parks employee, passed away earlier this year. The road that leads to the new nature center is named after him. McDowells family gathered at the nature center grand opening, during which a video was shown memorializing McDowell and the work he did for the Metro Parks system: (from left) daughter, Connie Lollo; grandchildren, Amber and Steven Lollo; wife, Sue McDowell; grandson, Darrin Summerford; daughter, Bonnie Summerford; and daughter, Debbie Omen and her husband, Tom.
