The newest exhibit at Gallery On High, “Southwest By Midwest,” features 40 photographs by Madison County natives, B.G. Burr and Bob Rea. The focus is landscapes of the southwestern United States, primarily New Mexico.
Burr and Rea grew up together in London and became friends through the Boy Scouts. On a boyhood trip to Philmont Ranch, a scout camp in New Mexico, Burr fell in love with the state. He has made New Mexico his home most of his adult life.
Rea remains a London resident, but travels often to the Southwest, always with his camera. On one trip, with Burr’s phone number in hand, he called his old Scouting buddy.
“I called him up cold one day from Albuquerque. We hadn’t been in touch in 20 years,” Rea said.
They rekindled their friendship and found common ground again through photography.
Burr holds a master degree in fine arts in photography. Rea pursue the art more as a hobby. Together, they put on the “Southwest By Midwest” show two years ago at Los Lunas Museum in Albuquerque. All along, their plan was to then bring the show to London, Ohio.
“It’s a look at the Southwest through the eyes of two guys from the Midwest,” Rea said.
The joys of shooting in New Mexico, he continued, are the light and the open landscapes.
“The light is just unlike anything in Ohio because there is no humidity. The sky is so blue,” he said. “And you can see forever. As much as I love Ohio and take pictures here, you’re not going to see forever.”
The exhibit features 40 pieces, 20 by Burr and 20 by Rea. All but one are for sale. The exhibit runs through Sept. 29.
